By James Slater – Last night in Germany, a triumphant Wladimir Klitschko, who had only minutes earlier retained his Ring magazine, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles with a one-sided beating of a ludicrously brave Samuel Peter, soon turned his attention towards WBA ruler David Haye.
The saga of this seemingly impossible-to-make fight has by now well and truly bored fight fans, what with both men’s claims of being avoided by the other, but the fact is, Klitschko-Haye is the only big heavyweight clash left to make. Basing things on “Dr. Steel Hammer’s” awesome showing last night, you may not find too many fans willing to predict a Haye win, but at least the younger, faster man from London would maybe test Wladimir and give him a few scares along the way. But will he ever fight Klitschko?
Wladimir is angry at how the man known as “The Hayemaker” has been “running away,” and the best heavyweight on the planet has a new nickname for Haye – as he revealed to Sky Sports just after flattening the game Nigerian warrior..
“I don’t care about David Haye,” Wladimir said sternly last night. “I wanted to fight him, but currently, this little duck keeps running away. David Haye, you’re a loser. You’re not following through with your words. I believe that’s not just the opinion of myself, but I believe it’s the opinion of most boxing fans.”
And, on this last comment, Wladimir may well be right. Certainly, on the forum pages of this website, fans aplenty are constantly berating Haye for being reluctant to get it on with the man he spent all those weeks/months chasing around and confronting. Haye, naturally, says he IS willing to face either Klistchko brother, just so long as he gets a fair deal contract-wise. Some fans are on Haye’s side, agreeing with him that the K-bros. are greedy/hard to negotiate with; while other fans are firmly on Wladimir and Vitali’s side, claming that no other fighters have real problems agreeing to fight them.
As angry as he is right now, Wladimir did say that he does feel he and Haye WILL finally fight one another one day.
“I believe so,” Klitschko said when asked if he thought the fight would one day get made. “There is only one belt out there that the Klitschko brothers don’t have, and that is the belt currently held by David Haye.”
As fans know, Haye “risks” this belt against Audley Harrison in his next fight, set for November 13th in Manchester, England. Assuming he comes through that fight okay, will Haye then give us all what we want so much and put his name down on a contract next to Wladimir’s name? We can keep on hoping.
