McKart Injury Postpones UBO World Title Fight
Turner Boxing Productions have informed the Universal Boxing Organization™ that an injury sustained by Bronco McKart has forced them to postpone his fight for the UBO World Middleweight title originally scheduled for September 18.
The new date will be October 30, and the venue will remain Monroe High School in McKart’s hometown of Monroe, Michigan.
McKart, 52-9-1 (31), last fought in February where he won an Inter-Continental title beating Jose Miguel Rodriguez Berrio from Columbia, and is a former WBO and IBA world champion. His opponent for October 30 is still to be announced, but promoter Dennis Turner is working on confirming a name soon.
Green vs Flores
IBO cruiserweight champion and Australian fan favorite Danny Green will risk his title for the fourth time in his home country on Nov. 17, taking on unbeaten American visitor BJ Flores in a scheduled 12-round bout at Challenge Stadium in Perth.
Now 37 years old, Green, a native of Perth, captured the vacant IBO crown with a fifth-round stoppage of Julio Cesar Dominguez in the semifinal feature to a Roy Jones Jr.-Jeff Lacy main event 13 months ago at the Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. He earned a signature victory with his one-round TKO of Jones in his next fight four months later.
Green is 30-3 with 27 knockouts and is unbeaten – 18-0 – in his career above 168 pounds. “Flores is arguably the biggest fighter I’ve ever had to fight and I’m expecting a difficult encounter going up against a very skillful undefeated boxer”
Flores, 31, a former Golden Gloves champion improved to 24-0-1 and scored his 15th career knockout when he stopped Epifanio Mendoza in four rounds on the Jones-Lacy show in 2009.
A San Francisco native now living in Chandler, Ariz., he is the No. 2-ranked challenger at cruiserweight in the IBO’s Top 100 computerized rankings for September.
Melissa “Huracan” Hernandez Update
Hurricanes Danielle and Earl are rearing their ugly heads and threatening destruction on the east coast but a more familiar “Huracan” has slowed to a dull roar and is staying ready to storm another opponent after her August fourteenth unanimous decision win in Bernalillo, New Mexico over Victoria Cisneros. Melissa “Huracan” Hernandez (13-2-2) is hardly resting on her laurels after dominating Cisneros, but is back at work, war wounds and all, and ready to improve on her performance. “I haven’t watched the tape yet, but my understanding of the fight from outside, people are saying I flew in for the kill like Sea Biscuit,” Hernandez laughed. “She was a great warrior but I knew I would be faster. I give my performance that night a 7, because I got hit, but sometimes in fights with warriors stuff like that happens,” Hernandez said. “In my eyes,” she continued, “I thought the fight should have been stopped, and I wasn’t happy with the beating they let her get, but it’s prizefighting, and I got the prize.”
Back in the gym three days after the fight, black eye and all, Hernandez is dedicated to staying prepared. “I’m training for anything that may come up,” she admitted. “I will never make the mistake again of getting fat between fights,” she said referring to her loss against Lindsay Garbatt. Promoter Stephanie Jaramillo is working to schedule another fight October sixteenth, and if the card comes together, Hernandez is looking forward to returning to New Mexico. “ I will go back to New Mexico ANYTIME!” she exclaimed. “It’s not Hollyhood anymore, it’s Huracan Country. The people in New Mexico enjoyed what they got with me and Cisneros. I can fight,” she said. “I don’t need a rich old man buying me fights. Albuquerque is a great fight town. They like fights, not rabbit chases,” Hernandez continued. “As for Garbatt, I would like the rematch just to put it all behind me. Garbatt comes to fight and I’ll be skinny this time,” she promised with a laugh, “not a ‘fighter that believes my own headlines’ fighter. Garbatt only saw me in the ring- she didn’t fight me. But she will be fighting me in the rematch.”
Staying ready for “anything that might come up” Hernandez is aware Miguel Cotto is headlining at Madison Square Garden December 4 against Julio Chavez Jr., and wants to show Top Rank boss Bob Arum what “womyn’s boxing” is really about. “If I fought on this undercard with Cotto in New York, you have the making of what Don King did with Christy Martin,” she said. “I’m all the things male fighters like. I have the heart of Tito Trinidad, the swagger of Camacho and the excitement of Gatti, plus, I’m not not bad on the eyes.” she joked but is anything but teasing about getting a spot on the December card. “I’d give Top Rank what they’ve been looking for in a champion,” she said and reminded, “I am womyn’s boxing. Being world champion is fun, being pound for pound is great, but I wanna be a legend on boxing.”
