World champion in waiting Nathan Cleverly says he wants a big fight in south Wales after watching the Ryder Cup. The European light-heavyweight king was glued to golf’s greatest event as Europe recorded a nail-biting win at Celtic Manor in Newport, just a few miles from Clev’s Cefn Fforest home. Part of their success was down to a passionate home crowd, and Cleverly believes the same kind of support can propel him to being the best in the world..
The 23-year-old will probably fight for a world title in England after a string on fights in London and Birmingham.
But promoter Frank Warren has promised him a return to Cardiff if he does land the WBO light-heavyweight strap later this year.
“Watching the Ryder Cup showed Welsh sports fans at their best,” said Cleverly.
“The noise when Europe finally won was unbelievable. Now I want some of that for myself.
“I can’t wait to start fighting in front of my own supporters down here in Cardiff, although the backing I’ve hot all over the UK has been absolutely fantastic.
“When Joe Calzaghe was a world champion there were some fantastic nights in Cardiff, and I was lucky enough to be on the undercard a few times.
“Now I want to be topping the bill and hearing everybody singing my name.”
BURNS IS A BANGER!
WBO World super-featherweight world champion Ricky Burns is now bangers and smash after having a sausage named after him.
A butcher in his native Coatbridge has done the 27-year-old the honour following his thrilling win over Roman Martinez.
Burns climbed off the canvas to snatch Martinez’s unbeaten record in a war in last month.
The famous victory has elevated him to star status in Scotland, with fans eagerly anticipating the announcement of his first title defence this Thursday.
In the meantime, they can tuck into a tasty sausage – The Ricky Burns Chippy Champ – which has been inspired by the new champ.
It will be on sale at Atlantic Fast Food in Coatbridge, with Burns officially unveiling the tasty treat on Wednesday.
“It’s a great honour,” said Burns.
“My world title victory seems to have really caught everyone’s imagination.
“It’s fantastic that people in Scotland are getting behind me, but I have to keep on delivering in the ring.
“I’ve got my first defence coming up in December, so I don’t think I will be tucking into too many Chippy Champs until Christmas!”
Graham Earl Takes Championship Boxing To Northampton On October 16th.
Former World Champion Graham Earl brings Championship boxing to Northampton on Saturday 16th October. Earl, who is now promoting boxing events, will be presenting a night of boxing, at Northampton Cricket Ground in Northampton.
Co-headlining Earl’s ‘JUDGEMENT NIGHT’ event will British Masters Light Welterweight Champion Jay Morris, who will be defending his title against Gavin Deacon, and Paul Morby who will be battling it out with Steve Timms for the vacant British Masters Super Middleweight title.
The main support to the double title header will be a rematch between Jamie Boness and Ryan Clarke. The exciting undercard also features Manny Oshunrinde against Matt ‘Firefighter’ Jack and Jermayne Smyle against a yet to be named opponent.
‘Judgement Night’ will also see the professional debuts of Ian Boyd, Joe Hillerby and Terry Holmes.
