Patricia Alcivar: “Perhaps the big TV networks like HBO and Showtime need to feature women’s bouts on the undercards of big fights for the women to get recognized more”

by Geoffrey Ciani (Interviewed by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) – Last week’s 113th edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio featured an exclusive interview with women’s boxing prospect Patricia Alcivar (3-0, 3 KOs) who is scheduled to face Laura Gomez (3-2) in a rematch on March 4 in Woodhaven, New York. “Patty Boom Boom” spoke about her upcoming fight and shared her views on her career and other matters pertaining to the current boxing landscape. Here are some excerpts from that interview:

On why she is having a rematch against Gomez:

“Well there is a few reasons for that. I fought Laura in my second fight. This will be my fourth fight. In that match which was a four rounder, her corner threw in the towel and she felt the fight was stopped at the end of the fourth round, literally with just a few seconds left. She thought it was a stoppage that shouldn’t have happened and she wanted a second chance to prove herself and of course I definitely give people the benefit of the doubt and I wanted to take this fight so I can prove to her that the stoppage was correct.”

On her first fight against Laura Gomez:

“I believe that I was definitely getting the better of each round. They were close rounds and I have to give Laura every credit. She’s very aggressive and she moves forward. She does not move back at all and she’s a very busy fighter, but I just felt that I was edging her out in each round. When they did stop it, it was because I was throwing nonstop but I thought that my punches were cleaner and harder so we both have something to prove in this rematch.”

Her views on women’s boxing and why it seems unable to catch on with mainstream boxing fans:

“I think that this is something that will kind of get addressed. I think that promoters and especially TV stations like ESPN2 and perhaps the big TV networks like HBO and Showtime need to feature women’s bouts on the big undercards of fights for the women to get recognized more. I believe Christy Martin is fighting soon on a major undercard that will be televised. The first time that Christy Martin did that it drew so much attention and I don’t understand why there’s not more of that. I’m just hoping that this new opportunity with Christy Martin being televised on a major fight card will send a message to these big promoters and TV networks that women’s fights are worth televising.”

On whether she is excited to be fighting in her hometown of New York and whether that gives her any added pressure to perform:

“Yes to everything. Fighting in New York City in my hometown in none other than Queens, New York is definitely a dream come true. I fought as an amateur at Madison Square Garden for the New York City Golden Gloves and I had so many friends and supporters there. I never imagined that I would be fighting professionally and now in my hometown so it’s just an amazing opportunity. The pressure is definitely on. It’s huge but these are the kind of things you kind of have to do as a professional athlete and deal with them, and the more you deal with them the better athlete you become.”

Regarding some of her favorite fighters who she most enjoys watching:

“I love athletes that just dig deep and bring on an incredible performance. I would say personally as a boxer I definitely enjoy the lighter weights like Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, I love, love, love Manny Pacquiao, ‘The Pac-Man’. They are just very active athletes and these are very admirable athletes as well and they’re good inside and outside the ring. I think that’s what I most admire about Manny Pacquiao is that he’s just so humble. Humility is such a rare and important attribute and I definitely admire that from him.”

Her views on the upcoming fight between Manny Pacquiao and Sugar Shane Mosley:

“I admire both athletes greatly, but I don’t think Mosley will bring that edge that with Manny Pacquiao he needs. I think that it’s actually going to be an easy fight for Manny and I hope that down the road he can find boxers that will challenge him more. I honestly don’t think that Mosley is going to be that big of a challenge for him.”

Her official prediction and how she believes her rematch with Laura Gomez will play out:

“This will be my fourth professional fight so I definitely have more experience than the first time t hat I fought her and I was coming off of six or seven months of inactivity, and what a lot of people don’t know is I was also fighting on a broken foot. So I think that this time I will be able to sit down a little bit more on my punches. I’ll have more conviction. I feel more conditioned. I’m in better shape so I think the result will be a faster stoppage and another opportunity to showcase my abilities. No matter I will walk away with a ‘W’.”
