By James Slater: A while back, at a time when the Klitschkos (Wladimir mainly) were embroiled in ongoing, tiresome negotiations with David Haye, it was announced how Polish heavyweight Tomasz Adamek had an agreement to face one of the two brothers in September, in Poland, in a huge out-door arena. All along, it was felt “Goral,” the former light-heavyweight and cruiserweight champ, would face WBC boss Vitali. And now, in a new release from thenews.pl, it has been reported that it has been announced that this will indeed almost certainly be the case.
Adamek, who must first take care of Ireland’s big Kevin McBride, is now focusing on landing his dream fight with “Dr. Iron Fist.” However, while David Haye’s chance at a Klitschko is definitely on, with the WBA champ having signed the contract, Adamek’s date with destiny is reliant on a number of things.
Not only does Adamek have to get past McBride as I’ve said (most fans see no problem there for the 34-year-old Pole), but Vitali must also get past the unbeaten, talented and highly dangerous Odlanier Solis on March 19th. And even if the near-40-year-old Klitschko beats the Olympic gold medallist, there is the possibility Haye will go on to beat Vitali’s younger brother in the summer. If this happens (and with Haye’s blend of speed and raw power it definitely could!), you can bet good money on the fact that Vitali would have an unquenchable urge – a need even – to get Haye into the ring so he can extract revenge. If this is what happens, where will it leave Adamek?
Ask the odds makers right now, and they’ll tell you Vitali beats Solis, Wladimir beats Haye and, the biggest certainty in the opinion of the bookies, Adamek beats McBride. If form is obeyed, then, Adamek will be fine and he will almost certainly wind up facing Vitali, for the WBC crown, in front of something like 60,000 fans in that soccer stadium in Poland.
A fighter, any fighter, can only concentrate on what he has to do in the ring in his own fight or fights. But I reckon Polish boxing’s biggest hero will be keeping his fingers crossed that, A: Vitali gets past the man known as “La Sombre” a week on Saturday, and that B: Wladimir then gets past the man known as “The Hayemaker” on either June 25th or July 2nd!
According to the newspl.com piece, Adamek’s date with McBride has been brought forward to April 9th. The scheduled 12-rounder will go ahead at The Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.
