Calderon-Segura II preview, Morel stops Maldonado, Camacho Jr. vs. Duran on 4/8

By Gerardo Gomez: Tomorrow is the highly anticipated rematch between Puerto Rico’s Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6KOs) and Mexico’s Giovani Segura (26-1-1, 22KOs). Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon weighed in at 107 lbs and Giovani “Aztec Warrior” Segura weighed in at 108 lbs.

Last August, Segura traveled to Puerto Rico to face the undisputed WBO Junior Flyweight Champion, Ivan Calderon, who had not lost in his professional career. After putting on a beautiful display of boxing and aggressive attack, the Aztec Warrior forced the Iron Boy to take a knee and not only gave Calderon his first professional loss but took his belt away from him as well.

This time, the fight is in Mexico and when they meet tomorrow in Mexicali, it should be one amazing fight. For Ivan Calderon, he states that he is more prepared to handle Segura’s aggressive style so he is going to rely on his experience and his boxing ability. I expect Calderon to hit and run and move around trying to avoid Segura’s punches. Calderon is coming into the fight and will try to make it a Chess match. He knows that he can’t stand toe to toe with Segura. If he does, this fight will end in less than 8 rounds.

Giovani Segura knows one way how to fight and this going forward and throwing punches. For some, tomorrow’s fight is like Round 9. He is not going to change a lot from his last fight. What we may see is Segura throwing more combinations and trying to land more body punches. One thing about Segura’s fights is that they are never boring fights. He is a true Aztec Warrior.

Another thing worth pondering is endurance and conditioning. Is Ivan Calderon more conditioned than last year? Can he keep to Segura’s pressure? Is it effective for Calderon to fight while back peddaling? Will Segura work the body from the opening round? Is Segura willing to take 3 punches to land 1? Will the fight last more than 8 rounds? Will the fight have the same results as the first one? The only way to find out is for us to tuned in tomorrow. I think Giovani Segura is too much for Ivan Calderon. I have Segura knocking out Calderon between the 6-8 rounds. If Segura doesn’t knock him out in the middle rounds, he will connect in the later rounds. This fight is not going past the 10th round.

Hector Camacho Jr. Looks to Avenge Father’s Loss to Saul Duran April 8

Next Friday night, April 8, in Atlanta, Middleweight boxer Hector Camacho Jr. will look to avenge his father’s loss against Saul Duran. Hector “Macho” Camacho—a boxing legend with multiple championships—fought Duran at the tail end of his career last May and was defeated in 10 rounds, ending his incredible career with a record of 79-6-3.

This fight is not only about Camacho Jr. getting revenge and evening the playing field against Duran, but to also win to keep his hopes of getting another championship fight later this year.

“Of course I want to get out there and avenge my father’s loss,” said Camacho Jr. about fighting Duran. “But at the end of the day it is about getting the ‘W’ and working towards a title fight.”

Last year Camacho Jr. fought David Lemieux for the WBC International middleweight title and was defeated. Since he has rebounded with a win over Juan Astorga, and looks to make an impact in his fight against Duran to make a bid for an upcoming title shot.

“Losing that championship fight in October really irks me, and I have been using it as motivation for getting ready for these upcoming fights,” said Camacho Jr. “I need to continue to win, and if I can land a huge fight by September or October then I’ll be right on point with my game plan.”

Camacho Jr. is adamant about staying active in upcoming months in preparation for a possible championship fight.

“After the bout with Duran I want to line up at least two more fights between now and the summer, and keep working hard to get to the top.”

When Camacho Jr. is not training he donates a large part of his time to working with inner city kids and is a Board Member for the

nonprofit organization Find A Dream.

“I came from where a lot of these kids are coming from, and boxing was my way out,” said Camacho Jr. “Find A Dream is doing a great thing working with youth in communities throughout America. When kids don’t have a mentor or have direction, it is easy for them to stray of the path and get involved in drugs or gangs. But having an outlet like Find A Dream will help them stay on track and give them something to work for.”

Camacho Jr. will go to battle with Saul Duran Friday, April 8 at the North Atlanta Trade Center in Norcross, Georgia.
