By James Slater: It has been reported how Floyd Mayweather Junior, the boxing superstar who goes by the nickname of “Money,” has ran into a little bit of trouble regarding his finances. The IRS has demanded the 34-year-old pays a back taxes bill of $3.4 million, the taxes due for the earnings Mayweather picked up in the year 2009. As fans know, Floyd was hit with a larger IRS bill for unpaid taxes in 2006: this one for the sum of $5.6 million. This demand saw to it that Mayweather, abandoning his retirement plans, fought again.
The question now is, with this latest demand, will the 41-0 star opt to lace ’em up again so as to wipe out the debt with one fight? Much will depend on the result of Mayweather’s April 28th court appearance, when he will finally face those charges of larceny, domestic violence and coercion and robbery. If “Money” is found guilty and if he is given the stiffest penalty allowed, he could go to jail for up to 34 years! If that happened, both he himself and his many fans would have to forget all about any further boxing matches.
If, however, Floyd is acquitted in April, chances are big – in light of this latest tax bill – he will fight again. Recently asking for a whopping $100 million to fight Manny Pacquiao (according to promoter Bob Arum, anyway), Mayweather showed once again that his mind never wanders too far from the subject of money, boxing and Pac-Man.
Rumours suggest Mayweather will be a keen observer of the May 7th Pacquiao-Shane Mosley fight; with Floyd tuning in to see how many problems, if any, “Sugar” can give the Pound-for-Pound #1. And if he sees the near-40-year-old he soundly out-pointed in his last fight almost a year ago give Pac-Man a tough time, Mayweather, so the theory goes, will be given the boost he needs to sign to face Pacquiao himself.
Again, it all hangs on the decision of the court at the end of the month, but if Pac-Man wins in May, fans shouldn’t be massively surprised to see Mayweather (either after he’s had a tune-up or has not – most likely he will take one: Paul Spadafora’s name having been mentioned) fight the Filipino icon at the end of the year. Finally!
