By James Slater – Even though he will turn 45 in June, and even though the chances of him ever lacing up the gloves again, no matter how much money is offered, are mighty slim, there continue to be offers for Mike Tyson to box again. Along with the genuine offers that head in “Iron” Mike’s direction, are the rumours that the former heavyweight king will box once more..
Tyson need only be seen dropping a few pounds in a gym, and the rumour mill restarts, suggesting another comeback is imminent. Well, there has been an offer made to Tyson to fight again – in Poland, against one-time foe Andrew Golota.
Polish newspaper Fakt has reported how promoter Tomasz Babilonski has “held preliminary talks with Tyson’s manger,” and that Babilonski wants Tyson and Golota to meet again in Poland in September.
As fans may recall, Tyson and “The Foul Pole” met in a controversial 2000 fight, when Golota quit on his stool at the conclusion of the 2nd-round – only for the result to later be overturned from a Tyson win to a No Contest due to Tyson’s blood test coming up positive for marijuana. Now, Mr. Babilonski – who has announced how Tyson will be appearing in Poland for a three day publicity tour beginning September 8th – wants to promote a rematch.
“I want the two fighters to meet again,” he told Fakt. “We are currently in preliminary talks with Tyson’s manager and we have agreed that he will be in Poland for three days, starting September 8th.”
While it’s an extreme long shot this fight will ever see the light of day, stranger things have happened. And maybe Tyson, who last fought in 2005 (a pathetic quit job against Kevin McBride), will see Golota, who is almost as old as he is at age 43, as a beatable opponent?
Golota last fought in 2009, when he lost the “Polish Super-Fight” that was he against Tomasz Adamek. Seeing as how Golota is such an unpredictable fellow, both in and out of the squared circle, the chances of seeing him back in the ring are not as slim as they are for Tyson. It would be a massive shock, not to mention talking point, if the youngest WBC heavyweight ruler did announce a return. It won’t happen.
But, let’s be honest, we’d all watch if it did happen!
