Nathan Cleverly vs. Jurgen Braehmer on 5/21

Nathan Cleverly says he no longer has algebra equations in his head – but southpaws instead.

The undefeated Welshman takes on lefty Jurgen Braehmer on May 21 at The O2, London, live on Sky Box Office.

Interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) Light-Heavyweight Champion Cleverly will challenge full champion Braehmer for his title.

And Cleverly has been sparring exclusively with southpaws to prepare for the fight.

He’s no stranger to left handers after spending his formative years in the gym with Joe Calzaghe.

Now the Cardiff University mathematics graduate is planning to spar dozens of rounds with British super-middleweight champion James DeGale this week in Loughton, Essex.

“Until last year I went to bed with my head filled with numbers and equations because my head was stuck into books studying for my degree,” said Cleverly.

“Now with all the sparring that I’m doing with southpaws all I’m doing is thinking and dreaming about southpaws!

“I think I’ve watched every fight that Braehmer has ever had, and I’ve had guys in the gym replicating his style.

“I’m going to get some quality sparring with one of the best southpaws in the country with James DeGale.

“And I think I learned at the hands of the master as well when I grew up with Joe Calzaghe.

“He’s one of the best southpaws of all time, and the experience I got from facing him in the gym when I was just 18 will stand me in good stead against Braehmer.

“I’ve always enjoyed facing southpaws. I’ve not come up against too many in the pros, but I’ve dealt with them in the gym, and I deal with Braehmer on May 21.”
