Chris Arreola A Different Animal At 234-Pounds, Destroys Nagy Aguilera; Plans To Fight Again In Two Months

By James Slater – For at least a couple of years, fans have been urging talented heavyweight contender Chris Arreola to drop a substantial amount of weight by way of showing more dedication to training. In his last two outings, last night’s in particular, “The Nightmare” has turned in performances that make it clear he has listened to the fans. Weighing a near career-low 234-pounds for last night’s 3rd-round TKO stoppage of a game Nagy Aguilera, the 30-year-old was able to throw many combinations without getting the least bit winded, and Arreola promises he will stick to his renewed diligence towards training in the future.

A handful for any heavyweight out there when conditioned and focused the way he is now (would things have been at least a little bit different in Arreola’s losing fights with WBC king Vitali Klitschko and former cruiserweight champ Tomasz Adamek had he come in at 234?), Arreola said after despatching Aguilera how he will be back in the gym on Tuesday, and how he plans on fighting again in two or three months.

Referring to last night’s victory as “only his second fight back since being serious,” Arreola sure looked serious inside the Home Depot Centre in L.A. With the fans firmly on his side (always popular due to the exciting way he fights, Arreola can only get further fan support due to his new work ethic), “The Nightmare” showed he has the capability of once again getting as far as challenging for a major title..

Some people were worried he may have dropped too much weight too soon, but the Mexican/American looked both fast and strong last night. It will be very interesting to see who he is matched with in the coming months. Arreola says the loss to Adamek really bothers him, seeing as how he “gave” the fight to the skilled Pole merely by not turning up in shape. It’s unlikely Arreola will be given the opportunity to avenge the majority decision loss this year, seeing as how Adamek has that big fight with Vitali Klitschko coming up. But if Adamek causes the upset against “Dr. Iron Fist,” who knows, he may sign to make a defence against Arreola next year some time.

In the meantime, as he paves his way towards a second crack at a world title, there are plenty of interesting and potentially exciting match-ups out there for the heavily-tattooed warrior. An Arreola-Cedric Boswell fight would be intriguing, as would an Arreola-Robert Helenius match-up. Or how about a clash between Arreola and the promising-looking Seth Mitchell?

Arreola, as popular as he is, is going to have to earn a second shot at the title, and he must win a fight with a fellow contender to do so. Now that he has a renewed hunger (the right kind of hunger!), Arreola has his fans believing in him again. Providing he gets the right fights, 31-2(27) contender has every chance of seeing his dream come true.
