By Joseph Herron: AUSTIN, TX– On a special edition of Friday Night Fights from Austin, TX, celebrating the career of Austin native Jesus Chavez, American undefeated prospects were on display.
In the main event of the evening, undefeated Fernando Guerrero began his campaign at 154 lbs. against the always formidable Grady Brewer.
After a feeling out round in the first, both men turned up the action and started to land crisp compact shots to the head and body.
In the fourth round, Brewer hurt Guerrero with a right hook sending the undefeated prospect against the ropes. Brewer was awarded a knock-down after Fernando collapsed in the corner, but Guerrero was up at eight. Moments later, Brewer was on top of the 24 year old fighter in the center of the ring when Guerrero collapsed again. The ref jumped in and called a halt to the bout giving the Maryland prospect his first loss as a professional.
“It was a good stoppage,” stated the new NABF 154 lb title holder. “I caught him with a sneaky right uppercut as he was coming in and he crumbled to the canvas. The ref saw that he was really hurt and made the right call.”
With the win, Brewer improves to 28-12 with 16 knock-outs and grabs the NABF Junior Middleweight Championship.
Karim Mayfield, from San Francisco, CA, (13-0-1, 8 KOs) fought “2 Pound” Steve Forbes (35-9, KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout.
Mayfield looked sharp early, countering the Las Vegas veteran with short crisp right hands, but seemed to tire in the mid to late rounds. Forbes never seemed to get going and served as target practice for most of the fight.
Mayfield peppered the former “Contender” star with rights and lefts for most of the bout, and in the tenth and final round, the welterweight contender from San Fran turned up the heat and hurt Forbes with a brilliant combination to the head, hurting the Vegas fighter. He pummeled the 34 year old ring veteran in the corner until the ref called a halt to the bout with only a minute remaining in the fight.
“I hurt him in the first round and I had never seen him hurt like that,” claimed the undefeated prospect. “I knew that if I turned up the heat in the tenth, I was going to be the first to stop Steve Forbes. I did it and now the sky is the limit.”
Steve Forbes gets stopped for the first time in his professional career and Karim Mayfield improves his record to 14-0-1, with 9 KO.
