Khan’s Big, Big Plans: Judah, Morales, Brook – Then Mayweather!

By James Slater: There are news stories all over the web sites today, reporting how Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy has had talks with Floyd Mayweather Junior regarding the possibility of him facing Britain’s Amir Khan in what would be a massive fight for the U.K late next year.

Speaking with the media, as quoted by The Manchester Evening News, Schaefer said the following with regards to a possible Mayweather-Khan fight:

“I’ve had conversations with Mayweather and Al Haymon and they are definitely open to a fight with Amir Khan, absolutely. Floyd has indicated he would like to do the Pacquiao fight. He said he’d be open to fighting Pacquiao next if the testing issue can be sorted out. Amir would then fight in the Autumn against Mayweather. Mayweather absolutely loves the British fans so I wouldn’t rule out him fighting here. We’d have to see if we could do the Khan fight here [U.K] from a timing and pay-per-view point of view, but it’s a big stretch.”

Schaefer rightly feels a Mayweather-Khan fight, if it happened, would be most suited to the U.S. Still, the idea of “King Khan” facing “Money” is no longer a mere pipe dream for Khan. The 24-year-old has wanted this fight, and has spoken about getting it, for the longest time and now he seems to be in with a real chance of landing it. Of course, a whole lot must happen first. Mayweather, who Schaefer says has “rediscovered his love for boxing,” must first defeat WBC welterweight champ Victor Ortiz in September. Then, assuming Pac-Man suddenly agrees to “take the test,” the whole world will be caught up in the hype surrounding Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao; making any excitement over the possibility of a Mayweather Vs. Khan clash pale by comparison.

But if the Pacquiao fight cannot be made, and if Khan has made a success of his big plans (more about these further down in this article), it’s is possible the superstar and the British superstar will get it on sometime in the closing months of 2012.

And Khan has it all planned out what he’s going to achieve on his way to the “Money” fight. According to The Manchester Evening News’ report, Khan’s plan is to: defeat Zab Judah on July 23rd, then face Mexican legend Erik Morales in defence of his unified 140-pound belts in December and then, next year, return to the U.K for a move up to welterweight against the currently unbeaten Kell Brook. If Khan can manage all this unscathed (and some good judges have him falling at the first hurdle and losing to “Super Judah”), he would then be in a great position.

For years now, Khan has said his ultimate goal is to become Pound-for-Pound king. If he can somehow pull off wins against Zab, “El Terrible,” Brook AND then Mayweather, he will have achieved this lofty goal!
