Mumbai Fighters ready for the World Series of Boxing
Lausanne, Switzerland, 4 November 2011 – Mumbai Fighters unveil their power-packed team which includes 17 top-class pugilists, comprised of 13 Indian and 4 foreign boxers. With reputed names such as Akhil Kumar, Balbir Singh, Jitender Kumar and Diwakar Prasad from India as well as Paul Koon (USA), Trent Rawlins (AUS) and Patrick Gallagher (IRL), the camp is confident of a real successful season.
ESPN Star Sports will broadcast the Mumbai Fighters and WSB live exclusively to the Indian public, which means that the audiences will be able to discover and see firsthand the future of the nation’s boxers. Allowing the public to become familiar with the stars of tomorrow, connecting them with different target groups and giving them the encouragement to go out and perform to the best of their abilities.
AIBA President and Chairman of the WSB Board, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu stated: “As Chairman and on behalf of the WSB Board, I have been very impressed to witness how professional the Mumbai Fighters Franchise have been in creating such an operational team, becoming one of the most competitive through the recruitment of some excellent boxers. I am convinced that this squad will be highly regarded by their rivals when the competition starts next week. This confirms what we have always believed: India has a bright future in boxing and more even more so in this upcoming WSB season.”
This development in boxing has brought together the nation, the federation, and those who are supporting this wholeheartedly. Abhay Singh Chautala, President of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) said, “WSB is a big leap for Indian boxing, I am sure the league will be a huge success and will help a great deal in the overall development of the sport. Moreover this unique concept is bound to encourage more Indians to take up boxing as a profession”.
Udit Sheth, Team Principal added, “We have a team in top shape. Our Head Coach and Technical Director along with the entire coaching staff have put in a huge effort to turn the boxers into men of steel. Our diversity is our strength; this team is hungry to learn. This team is going global under expert guidance. Boxing is also the next big fitness program waiting to explode globally”.
The World Series of Boxing will also provide a great platform for the lesser known boxer to make a name for themselves and be recognised in the global boxing arena. Universal Sports, the Mumbai Fighters partner, hopes WSB will help grow the sport and its brand’s popularity. “We are quite certain that the requirement for Boxing equipment and apparel will grow as the Masses and the youth start to follow the sport. There will be a huge boost to the game when people start seeing boxing as a fitness alternative. Our Brands Punchline is ‘The Unbeatable’, we are very sure that the Mumbai Fighters will soon be the ‘unbeatables'”.
The final team for the Mumbai Fighters is:
Bantamweight: Jitender Kumar, Balbir Singh, Gaurav Bidhuri, Vipin Kumar
Lightweight: Akhil Kumar, Diwakar Prasad, Siddharth Varma
Middleweight: Patrick Gallagher, (Ireland), Mandeep Jangra, Vijay Hooda
