By Ken Neir: Middleweight contender David Lemieux’s once promising career took another hit on Saturday night when he suffered his second consecutive loss in getting beaten by a highly motivated former WBA junior middleweight champion Joachim Alcine (33-2-1, 19 KO’s) by a 12 round majority decision at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The judges scored it 116-112 and 116-112 for Alcine, 114-114 even. The fight didn’t look even slightly close and even the 116-112 scores were highly generous to Lemieux.
Lemieux came into the fight ranked #3 by the World Boxing Council. Lemieux will likely get pushed way down after tonight, because he fought really poorly in losing and is probably lucky he didn’t get knocked out because he was hurt on a number of occasions by Alcine.
Alcine took his time in the first couple of rounds waiting for Lemieux to shoot his load and start to fade like he did in losing by an 7th round TKO last time he fought back in April against Marco Antonio Rubio. Alcine didn’t really start taking the fight to Lemieux until around the 3rd, when he began to land more and more shots. In the last half of the fight, Alcine was literally taunting a tired and totally confused Lemieux and battering him with combintions and stiff jabs. Lemieux continued to pressure but he had nothing on his shots and often his punches were skillfully blocked by Alcine. Lemieux was looking to tie Alcine up frequently in the last rounds of the fight, as he was clearly exhausted and trying to survive to the finish.
In looking at Lemieux fight tonight it’s hard to imagine that he was once considered a future world champion and star in the middleweight division after a quick start of his pro career. All you can think now is the guy will be lucky if he can hang around and function as a gatekeeper type of role in the division.
