By Michael Collins: British heavyweight David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) has just begun his career and still trying his way to the top, but his manager Frank Maloney is already expecting huge things from his fighter, and believes he’ll someday eclipse former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis in career earnings in the ring.
Maloney, who used to manage Lewis years ago, said to Sky Sports News “Lennox Lewis was perhaps the most individual richest sportsman our country has ever produced. I am convinced that David Price will go far beyond that.”
Okay, that sounds nice but Price still hasn’t beaten anyone with a pulse and his amateur pedigree suggests Price will fall short of what Lewis accomplished in terms of both career money and in winning world titles.
Price, 28, won a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics in the super heavyweight class. However, he was stopped by the eventual gold medalist Roberto Cammarelle in the 2nd round and had problems the moment the fight started. Price’s chin is clearly his weakness in his armor, as is his lack of defense. He doesn’t block shots like the Klitschko brothers; he doesn’t get out of the way of shots like the Klitschkos, and he doesn’t use his jab all that often.
Price still looks very raw, and could really flourish with an excellent trainer like Emanuel Steward to assist his career. At 28, Price is far behind the accomplishments of Lewis at a similar age, as well the Klitschkos. Maloney might want to get a good trainer like Steward quickly and move him over to the states where he can get some good training before Price ages out.
We saw former British super heavyweight Olympic gold medalist get off to a late start as well after winning a belt and he spent most of his career fighting in the UK. Harrison could have been a lot better had he been with someone like Steward. Price can’t afford to wait too long because he’ll be 30 before you know it and he’s got a lot of really bad habits in the ring.
