With viable opponents for the Klitschko brothers dwindling down to former cruiserweight title holders and a fighter who lost two of his last three fights, there are few boxing insiders who don’t feel that there is a need for a jolt of adrenaline needed for the heavyweight division. And one heavyweight is now entering the race and calling out the Klitschko’s, with the power and record to excite fans and rekindle interest in a Klitschko title fight like no fighter since David Haye.
“We are calling them (the Klitschko’s) out,” promoter Zef Ramirez said about his undefeated fighter David Rodriguez (36-0, 34 KO’s), “We were moving on up the rankings and setting up for the fight in 2012 or 2013, but let’s face it, this is getting ridiculous. Who wants to see Dereck Chisora against Vitali after he was dominated by Tyson Fury last year? And who wants a fight between Wlad and Jean-Marc Mormeck? Mormeck was a decent cruiserweight champion, but it’s time that Wlad stop going down in weight to find opponents and fight a dangerous heavyweight with the power to seriously hurt him.”
Rodriguez, who was rated as high as #13 in the World Boxing Council (WBC) rankings last year (he is currently #17), and is the current WBC Mexican National Champion. Rodriguez sees that the time is now right to take on the Ukrainian champions.
“I think this is the right time for a fight,” Rodriguez said, “I respect them as fighters and champions, but let’s do this and give the fans something to get excited about for once.”
Promoter Zef Ramirez also sees this as the perfect time to position his undefeated bomber for a title fight.
“We originally were talking about a 2013 title fight with some high profile fights with contenders in 2012, but with the state of the heavyweight division, we decided to strike while the iron’s hot. David Rodriguez is the most exciting heavyweight on the planet, and the most dangerous puncher in the division. If the Klitschko’s want to make a statement, they need to start taking on the next generation of great heavyweights, and at the front of that list is David Rodriguez!”
