By James Slater – Former WBA heavyweight champ David Haye has written on his Twitter page how he is intrigued enough by tonight’s fight between WBC king Vitali Klitschko and Dereck Chisora to want to be there live. Haye, who had previously said he thinks Vitali will be too strong and powerful for Chisora and that “Dr. Iron Fist” will definitely win, has admitted that yesterday’s “slap” has tweaked his interest.
“On route to Germany as after that SLAP, I’m intrigued to see LIVE how Vitali Klitschko responds. The “slap” could be the worst move or the greatest move ever!,” Haye wrote.
As fans know, Haye went as far as he could to get under the skin of Wladimir Klitschko, succeeding in annoying both brothers with his infamous severed heads T-shirt stunt. Yet Haye never went as far as laying a hand on either sibling outside of the ring the way “Del Boy” did at yesterday’s weigh-in (the critics argue Haye never even laid a hand on Wladimir during the actual fight!). Like the rest of us Haye – who is sure to get booed if his name is introduced to the crowd tonight – wants to see how Vitali reacts. Will the 40-year-old, motivated by anger, come out smoking the way Chisora and his team feel and hope he will? Or will we witness yet another cool, calm and precise Klitschko performance in just over seven hours time?
Speaking of Haye, he recently gave an exclusive interview with Talk Sport, during which he said he has “agreed all the financial details and rematch clauses [for a fight with Vitali].”
Haye said that after agreeing these details back in December, he purposely kept a low profile, waiting as he was for the contract to come through. Yet “no contract came through,” Haye said.
“All of a sudden, he [Vitali] starts making noises that I was demanding too much money, yet the money had already been agreed,” Haye told Kick Off. “His excuse was that RTL had cut his money so he needed to slash my money more than we’d already agreed. I’d love to fight him. We agreed a date in June to fight him. I agreed to go to Germany. I agreed to all the typical Klitschko clauses.
“What I truly believe the problem is, is that he’s been very vocal about knocking me out. He also wants to be the prime minister of Ukraine, or something like that. If, for whatever reason, he fights me and doesn’t knock me out it wouldn’t look good for him. It would mean he had lied to all his Ukrainian people. What happens if I go out there and beat him? I guarantee if I beat him his political career is over because he uses his boxing career as a sort of power to show the world that he is a force, not only in politics but as a man.”
Some interesting thoughts from Haye. Of course, most fans will instantly dismiss Haye’s claims that Vitali has any doubts whatsoever about his chances of beating “The Hayemaker,” but why else would the reigning WBC king delay sending the agreed contract to London?
Let’s see what happens in tonight’s fight. If Vitali does as most fans (at least on this website) think he will do and wins in style over Chisora, it could be that Mr. Haye will be up close and personal in challenging him to accept him as his very next challenger!
