By James Slater – As fans many be aware, former light-heavyweight and cruiserweight champ turned heavyweight contender (and former WBC title challenger) Tomasz Adamek will return to action on the March 24th Zab Judah-Vernon Paris card set for Brooklyn, N.Y. “Goral” is, according to Fightnews.com, currently working in the gym with Bobby Gunn, the man he stopped in four-rounds in what was his final fight as a 200-pounder, back in July 2009.
Gunn is training for his upcoming April heavyweight clash with James “Lights Out” Toney. 35-year-old Adamek, 44-2(28), last seen losing in a brave attempt to take Vitali Klitschko’s crown, has yet to 100-precent know for sure who he will face next month. Boxrec have 25-year-old Nagy Aguilera, 17-6(12) down as the Polish hero’s opponent, but Fightnews report that 39-year-old Donnell Holmes, 33-2-2(29) is also under consideration for the fight.
Either way, it will be good to see the exciting Adamek back in action. Still believing he can achieve his goal of becoming world heavyweight champion, Adamek will no doubt look to get himself back into contention with a number of high profile wins. As a start back, either Aguilera or Holmes would be a decent test/confidence builder. Adamek will be a heavy favourite against either man and rightly so, but we must wait and see what damage, in any, the loss to “Dr. Iron Fist” did to the former IBF cruiserweight king.
Aguilera is best know for four fights: his 1st-round KO win over former WBC heavyweight champ Oleg Maskaev, his 2nd-round KO loss to another former WBC champ in Sam Peter, his ten-round decision defeat to former light-heavyweight boss Antonio Tarver and his 3rd-round stoppage loss to Chris Arreola. Since the Arreola loss, Aguilera has won one fight; a stoppage over Stacy Frazier.
Holmes, known as “The Real Touch Of Sleep,” has not faced anywhere near as many big names as has Aguilera. Brian Minto and prospect Bowie Tupou are the 39-year-old’s most recognisable foes, and both men beat him. Holmes has not fought since dropping a ten-round UD to Tupou this past December.
Of the two names that are in the running to face Adamek, I’d prefer Aguilera, the much younger man of the two, to land the date. If this fight happens, look for Adamek to ease back into things with a fairly wide points win.
