By Chris Walker: Dave Coldwell’s “Big Bang” that hits Liverpool’s Echo Arena on April 13th is the beginning of a bumper eight days showcasing a whole host of Merseyside sporting talent. That period concludes with Derry Mathews challenging Manchester’s Anthony Crolla for the latter’s British lightweight title, and the Liverpool man is confident that Liverpool will have plenty to brag about when all is said is done.
“It’s going to be a good time to be a boxing fan in Liverpool,” beamed the former European title challenger.
“Dave [Coldwell] is delivering a big one in the Echo Arena with Tony Bellew fighting Danny Macintosh and that’s likely to be an exciting scrap but you’ve also got a load of local lads on the undercard with big futures. Nathan Brough, Joe Tonks John Watson and Andy Colquhoun are all good lads and they’ll be aiming to put on a show because it really is a massive event.”
After supporting a cluster of good friends, Mathews’ focus will instantly shift back to Lonsdale honours when he faces Crolla at Oldham just over a week later. Despite operating in belt class for large portions of his decade-long career, this is Mathews’ first attempt at the famous honour and he aims to grab this unlikely opportunity with both hands.
“Crolla’s a top talent, he’s a kid I really rate but I know what I’ve got what it takes to beat him. I made a lot of mistakes in the [Emiliano] Marsili fight and I was punished but this is the most dedicated and disciplined I’ve ever been in my life. There’s nothing
left for me if I can’t beat Crolla so you can say I’m fighting for my career. I’m hungry for his title and I’ve got the style to beat him. Mark my words; me and Bellew are going to be British champions on April 21st.”
David Coldwell in association with Eddie Hearn presents ‘The Big Bang’ which is live and exclusive on Sky Sports HD on Friday, 13th April 2012.
