2204-2006 WBO World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Discusses Retirement, Legacy, Memories, and What He’s doing now
April 3rd, 2012- Los Angeles, CA- Former WBO World Heavyweight Boxing Champion “Relentless” Lamon Brewster is the last boxer to defeat current heavyweight boxing ruler and IBF, WBO, and WBA World Champion Wladimir Klitschko. Lamon retired after his fight with Robert Helenius in January of 2010. Today, Lamon is happy and staying quite busy in Los Angeles, California. He is currently involved in several different ventures, and recently took time away from all of the hustle to discuss his retirement, memories, and boxing legacy.
Q. After your last fight against Robert Helenius you made the decision to go ahead and retire from professional boxing. Now that you’ve had some time to sit back and reflect will you tell us about your greatest memory about winning the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship?
Lamon Brewster: Well, I think that was just the process of all the hard training to get ready for the fight and all of the media. We really set the plan and the goal and then went out and accomplished it. That’s probably the most memorable.
Q. You’ve also said that even though winning the World Heavyweight Championship was a dream come true, the time after was also one of the hardest times of your life. Why was that?
Lamon Brewster: I wouldn’t necessarily say that it was the hardest time of my life, but it was just a whole change of life. People treat you different. The thieves comes out so to speak, you know the wolves come out. So, you have people treating you different and the scammers trying to get inside, and that was a very difficult thing to deal with.
Q. Following your career for many years, one of the things that we’ve all noticed about you was how much you always protected your reputation. You’ve really tried to steer clear of controversy, and you have always been very careful. How strongly did you really care about protecting your reputation, and what does your reputation mean to you?
Lamon Brewster: Well in the 48 Laws of Power it says reputation is everything. Guard it with your life. So for me, I call myself a man of God so there are certain situations that I can’t allow myself to be put in where people can so yeah he’s a so called man of God but look at what he’s doing or look at how he’s acting. It doesn’t matter whether it is the material objects that people idolize or just acting the way certain people do to try to get attention. You know, I don’t want that. I’ve always felt that my best is through God, and I always try to have a low profile and reputation.
Q. Well, now that you’ve retired as an active boxer when people talk about Lamon Brewster and the legacy that you’ve left what would you like people to say about you?
Lamon Brewster: I was a person that gave my all every chance I could. I put my best foot forward. You know, you can never say that you’ve watched a boring Lamon Brewster fight. I always came to fight and make things exciting. That isn’t to say that my opponents always did the same, but I always tried to do my best to give people their monies worth.
Q. What are you doing in your retirement to keep you busy?
Lamon Brewster: Well, I’m working on several projects. The first thing is I have a website called Fighting Connection that will be live soon. That will be a one stop shop for all full contact sports around the world supplying all you need require in sparring partners, finding managers, trainers, gym location, cut-men, and you name it. I’m also working on something called Relentless Secrets where I’m basically sharing my secrets of my past fighting and training to help up and coming fighters to have the best opportunities to be a champion, keep their titles, or to just help the everyday person get into top shape. I will be releasing this information on free webinars, and people can register for these free webinars at:
http://www.zrelentless.com
Or on my Relentless Secrets Facebook Fan Page at:
https://www.facebook.com/Relentless.Secrets/app_297597200284223
I also have a boxing gym on the West side of Los Angeles between Olympic and Sana Monica, and it’s called Fighting Connection. You can check it out online at http://www.fcgym.com, and you can see all of the pictures of me and my bother Deon Brewster giving instruction. You know I’m teaching the science of boxing, and I always tell people if you want to throw punches go down the street but if you want to learn the science of boxing, and I always refer to a fighters hands as their paint brushes, if you want to learn how to paint you’re in the right place.
Q. Is there anything else that you would like to say to your fans Lamon?
Lamon Brewster: I would really like people to pay attention to my Relentless Secrets, and the reason why is that every fighter and every champion has something that they keep away from the public because that’s what gives them their advantage over their competition. Now that I’m not boxing anymore I’d like to pass on what my advantage was and what helped me achieve my success to the up and coming fighters, or to others that just want to get in great shape. So, I hope that people will check it out and take heed to it as I did. I know that it will help them out.
Ok, thank you very much Lamon for taking the time to talk to us today. As always, it has been a pleasure speaking to you!
