By Josean Fernandez: As Max Kellerman stated during HBO’s Face Off “Miguel Cotto IS one of the best fighters of this era”. Now, I wouldn’t necessarily claim Max Kellerman the most astute boxing historian but he makes a point that is contradictory to the many articles and comments that I’ve read since the fight was announced.
Miguel Cotto is the current WBA Light Middle Weight Champ. He is 37-2 with 30 knockouts and a resume that rivals any boxer of this era. He has power in both hands, an excellent jab and a very under appreciated ring IQ. He has willingly fought everyone and anyone in his weight class and beyond without hesitation and has performed admirably. Miguel Cotto is the ultimate professional. Yet still, many believe this fight is a walk in the park for Floyd Money Mayweather.
How can a boxer with these credentials not receive the respect he so rightfully deserves?
Mayweather still considers Cotto undefeated, and rightfully so. Both of his losses are questionable. Margarito with plaster and Pacquiao with the catch weight. Yet even if you consider them losses, how many Hall of Famers have more than two losses? And news flash…Miguel Cotto WILL be in the Hall of Fame.
Now im not claiming Cotto will beat Mayweather. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did though. What I will say is this:
After watching HBO’s “Face-Off” Mayweather’s demeanor seemed…off. He didn’t seem like himself, he seemed lost. Not in his element. His comments werent fluid like we’re used to. Maybe he just couldn’t find an opening to insult Cotto? For a man that prides himself in being comfortable in every situation, he sure was uncomfortable in front of Cotto. Dare I say it?…Mayweather seemed NERVOUS.
Cotto is Elite and so is Mayweather. Isnt this what we want? To see two elite future hall of famers battling it out in the ring? Instead of allowing our bias to cloud our judgement, we should acknowledge the excellence of both fighters and look forward to an exciting fight.
