MONDAY! DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA TO BE HONORED BY PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL

Philadelphia, PA (April 20, 2012) – Joining the esteemed ranks of Philadelphia boxing champions Joe Frazier and Bernard Hopkins is the newest world champion from the City of Brotherly Love, Danny “Swift” Garcia. Garcia will be honored and recognized at a special reception with Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter, co-sponsored by Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sánchez (7th Dist.) and Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. (4th Dist.) to be held on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 11:00 am ET.

“We are proud to call ‘Swift’ a local hero and role model for our young people,” said Councilman Jones. “We need more champions in our communities who are excelling and realizing spectacular achievements like this.”

“I’m proud to be another Philadelphia champion, because this is a tough city,” said Garcia. “I’m ready to make a historic mark as a Philadelphia fighter and make my city proud.”

“We are extremely proud of Danny’s accomplishments at such a young age,” said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia’s boxing promotional company. “We know he is going to keep improving and continue to make the great city of Philadelphia and Golden Boy very proud.”

Danny “Swift” Garcia is a Puerto Rican-American professional boxer and the current World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Lightweight World Champion. On Saturday, March 24, 2012, Garcia captured the WBC Super Lightweight title by defeating future Hall of Fame and Mexican superstar Erik “El Terrible” Morales by unanimous decision.

Boxing runs in the Garcia family, as Danny’s father and former boxer, Angel Garcia, introduced him to boxing as a youngster and began taking him to Philadelphia’s Harrowgate Boxing Club when he was just 10 years old, the minimum age allowed by local law for a minor to train.

Garcia’s professional record stands at 23 wins and zero losses with 14 wins coming by way of knockout. He compiled over one hundred wins as an amateur, and won a U.S. National Amateur title.

The reception will be held at the Mayor’s Reception Room, 2nd Floor, City Hall, on Monday, April 23, 2012, at 11:00 am ET with a reception to follow in Conversation Hall.

NEWS – Ogogo makes it a Magnificent Seven for GB Boxing at 2012

A nail-biting wait for Callum Smith could see it become eight tomorrow

Anthony Ogogo made it a “Magnificent Seven” for GB Boxing today when he became the seventh member of the squad to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.

The middleweight, who has only just returned from a serious shoulder injury picked-up at last September’s World Championships, needed to reach the final at the second and decisive Olympic qualifying event in Trabzon to be guaranteed a spot at London. He booked his place with a convincing 14-7 victory over Vitalk Bandarenka of Belarus in today’s semi-final.

Anthony Ogogo said: “I am just so thrilled and relieved to have finally qualified after all the challenges I have had to overcome. I have had so much bad luck with injuries but I never lost faith in myself and have had some amazing support from the coaches and all of the back-up team that have helped me to get over my shoulder injury and be in a position to compete in this qualifier.

“I always knew that if I got myself fully fit and free of injury then I could compete with the best in the world and I just want to thank all of the people that have helped me to do this. It will be a dream-come-true to represent Great Britain in a home Olympics and I cannot wait to talk out in that Arena in London.

“It’s been a long hard journey to get this far but I have qualified now so my focus is going to be all about getting back in the gym, working hard, listening to the coaches and doing everything I can to be successful in the Olympics.”

Delight at Ogogo’s victory was tempered with disappointment for Light heavyweight Callum Smith who boxed superbly in his semi-final but lost 16-14 to Vatan Huseynli from Azerbaijan. The Liverpudlian now has to hope that Huseynli wins tomorrow’s final, which would guarantee Smith a place at London and an eighth qualifier for GB Boxing’s men.

GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken said: “I am very pleased for Anthony who really deserves this after everything he has been through. He has had to overcome some terrible luck with injury and it is great to see that his dedication, hard work and determination have been rewarded.

“At the same time, I am also disappointed that Callum has not qualified today and felt he boxed superbly as he has done all this week. Hopefully the result of the final will go his way and we will have another qualifier tomorrow.

“Whatever happens, I am very proud of the whole team and to have qualified seven boxers with the chance of an eighth tomorrow is a fantastic achievement by the boxers, the coaches and all of the support staff that have each played an important part in the success we have enjoyed this week and over the last three years.”

Earlier in the day, Edinburgh’s Josh Taylor who has also qualified this week in the lightweight division, lost his semi-final 13-10 to Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus and laves with a bronze medal and a place at the Olympic Games.
