Patrick Nielsen (14-0, 8 KOs) is the new World Boxing Association (WBA) Intercontinental Middleweight Champion following a spectacular tenth-round KO victory over Gaston Vega (17-5, 6 KOs). Fighting in front of 2,758 fans at a boisterous Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, the 21-year-old stamped his authority on the battle early. In the seventh, he floored Vega with a powerful combination, but the Argentinian recovered and fought back. In a huge round nine, Nielsen knocked his opponent down again but then went down himself after an exchange. However, he quickly regained his composure and ended the bout in style in the tenth when he scored two more knock-downs for the referee to wave the bout off. “I am thrilled to be the WBA Intercontinental Champion,” Nielsen said. “This is a big win for me. It was a tough fight. I was provoked badly by Vega and his ‘slayer’ shirt so I wanted to make him pay. I am glad I knocked him out in the end.”
Vega said it was a tough fight. “It was all or nothing for me in the end, I knew it would go one way or the other in the tenth round, I am very, very disappointed that I lost. It was a hard fight.”
Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: “Congratulations to Patrick for a spirited and courageous performance. It was an exciting fight, Vega gave it his all but Patrick´s superior skills and superior power succeeded in the end. This was an important victory for him. He will now enter the WBA rankings and continue his climb to the top. It was a great night of boxing in Frederikshavn with a fantastic atmosphere.”
In an action-packed undercard, European Super-Middleweight Champion James DeGale defended his title with a fourth-round TKO victory versus Cristian Sanavia. Andreas Evensen clinched the WBA International Featherweight Title with a majority decision against Willie “Big Bang” Casey, while Reda Zam Zam scored a fifth-round TKO victory over Broislav Kubin. Erik Skoglund knocked out Alberto Antenucci in the second round, and local hero Torben Keller TKOed Aliaksandr Abramenka in the fifth. Simon Smadaal also celebrated a successful pro debut with a first-round KO versus Pavel Staravoitau.
Marvin Quintero defeats Al Sabaupan via 9th round TKO in IBF title elimination bout
April 22, 2012 — In an International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title elimination bout that took place this past Saturday, April, 21 at Deportiva Centenario in Michoacán de Ocampo, Tijuana, Mexico’s, Marvin “Cachorro” Quintero (25-3, 21 KOs), defeated Philippine native, Al “Captain A” Sabaupan (18-1-1, 13 KOs), by ninth-round TKO. With the win, Quintero is now the No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger to face IBF champion Miguel Vázquez (30-3, 13 KOs).
“I was not going to be denied tonight,” Quintero said. “I had a great training camp and all the hard work paid off. Sabaupan was a worthy opponent, but my will and determination to win in front of my people was the driving force for me tonight. I’m very excited for my team because we are on a mission to win a world title together. And now I am the mandatory challenger to face Miguel Vázquez. I’ll be ready for war when we fight.”
Said promoter Gary Shaw, “Marvin is ready for a world title shot and tonight he proved he has what it takes to be a champion. He’s a big puncher and his power is visible as he has won by knockout in his last five fights. I’ll be in conversation next week with the IBF to see if we can make the Vázquez fight. I know Quintero wants that fight. His dream of becoming a world champion is right around the corner.”
Prospect Boxing announce June 1st show and the signing of former amateur champion Martin McCord
After our show in February at the Wishaw Sports Centre, Prospect Boxing are pleased to confirm that we are running our second show of 2012. Our next professional show will be on the 1st of June at the Rivals Gym,Newmains,Wishaw.
This is our first show at the Rivals Gym,and we are pleased to be bringing professional boxing to a venue for the first time. The card has 5 scheduled bouts featuring the Prince of Passion (Mitch Prince),Mark Bett,Iain Butcher and Giuseppe Daprato.
Completing the line up,and making his Prospect debut is Martin McCord. The Ayr based fighter had a accomplished amateur career winning the West of Scotland district championships 3 times and the Scottish championships 2 times.
“I’m really looking forward to making the next step up “ Explains McCord “I know it’s a harder game but I am looking forward to the challenge, I know you get hurt more at pro level and but can hurt people more as well!”
He adds “I cant wait to make my pro debut, it will be a special night for me. It will be good for all my friends to come see my first pro appearance and when i am in there I am going to entertain and give the crowd a debut they wont want to forget”
Looking to help him through his pro career will be a familiar face “I am sticking with my amateur trainer Sam Mullen, I have been with him since I started boxing at the age of 10. He really is a brilliant coach and pushes you to your limit in every training session”
With his corner sorted, the Ayr fighter confesses he will be looking to change a few things “My training will adapt as I am training more frequently and putting a lot more effort as I know it’s not just like the amateur’s were you ‘tip tap and run away’. There will be more harder sparring, more roadwork and more conditioning. But its all worth it in the end when the ref lifts your hand as the winner!”
