By James Slater: Tonight before his loyal fans in Liverpool, unbeaten heavyweight contender David Price scored the biggest, most important win of his pro career as he despatched Sam Sexton in the 4th-round. Flattening Sexton with a massive right hook that landed flush on the jaw, Price sent his man flat on his back, prompting referee Howard Foster to end the fight.
The official time was 2 minutes and 7-seconds of the 4th and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Price is now 13-0(11). Sexton, the former Commonwealth champ, is now 15-3(6).
Price began the fight by snapping out his fast, accurate and stiff left jab; the weapon blasting Sexton’s head back a number of times. Possessing fast hands for such a big man, Price unloaded a flashy combo against the tightly-defended 27-year-old. Price also went to the body.
The 2nd-round was also all Price, the 6’8” 28-year-old again showing patience behind his jab; some left hooks and right hands also being slung by the big man. Price was showing Sexton, so much the smaller man, plenty of respect, but he won another round with apparent ease..
The 3rd was a slow session, with Sexton mainly covering up, throwing just a few shots here and there when he came out of his shell. Then, just seconds before the bell, Price showed his raw power, decking Sexton with a somewhat cuffing right hand shot to the top of the head.
The end was soon coming in the 4th. Wobbled by a right hand, Sexton was under real fire as Price went for the finish. A sharp right uppercut sent Sexton down for the second time in the fight, and though the co-challenger fought back as best he could, he was totally outgunned. The finishing punch was world class and Sexton hit his head on the canvas as he went down hard.
How far can Price go? The entire boxing world wants to know. Price says he will continue to take his time, but tonight’s punch-perfect display suggests he is ready right now for anyone other than the Klitschkos . The two brothers will have a genuine challenger in around a year or so, however!
Price, without a doubt, is THE most exciting heavyweight contender in the world today.
