By Michael Collins: WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (24-0, 15 KO’s) have finished off permanently any talk of Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) ever facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. by totally obliterating Khan tonight in a 4th round TKO at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
All total, the 24-year-old hard hitting Garcia knocked Khan down three times in the fight before it was stopped in the 4th. Khan was actually fighting quite well until he got a little too overconfident late in the 3rd and ran into a big left hook from Garcia that planted Khan on the canvas. It was incredibly lucky for Khan that the knockdown occurred late in the round, because he badly hurt and wouldn’t have survived the round had the knockdown occurred earlier in the round.
Garcia continued to tee off a Khan in the 4th, hitting him with huge shots while Khan tried gamely tried to fight back. However, it useless and Khan hit the deck twice more and the fight was halted by the referee. Khan probably should have clinched the entire round and tried other tricks to let his clear, like putting Garcia in headlocks and other such stalling tactics. But Khan tried to fight and got blasted out for his efforts.
Where do you go from here if your Khan? He can forget about Mayweather and his dreams of being the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. That’s not happening. Khan really needs to re-think his idea of moving up to 147, because if fighters like Lamont Peterson and Garcia are able to beat Khan, just imagine what a legitimate welterweight would do to him. Maybe Khan can go after the WBO strap held down by 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez, but I wouldn’t like Khan’s chances in that fight either. Khan just doesn’t seem to have the chin for the game unfortunately.
